Zero Waste - want us to do even better?

A few keen Co-op members have started a conversation and are bouncing ideas around on how to help make the Co-op a Zero Waste operation. Are you interested in being a part? You can see some background information here: www.summit.zerowaste.co.nz/watch

Our Ocean, Plastic and the Co-op

We all know about micro plastics entering our oceans. At the Co-op we can all do our bit by reducing the use of plastic as much as possible. When we place orders we always seek a reduction in the use of plastics, ensure packaging can be returned or recycled as much as possible, and encourage the use of plastic alternatives. We've made some headway, but until there is a change much higher up than our little food co-op, the sector still produces too much plastic waste. So if you know of any hot tips, please let us know.

NZAEE Seaweek – Kaupapa Moana - is New Zealand’s annual national week celebrating the sea.
See what is happening around Nelson. Even if you don't engage with a formal event, perhaps you might just take some time to appreciate the magic sea right on our doorstep!

Use of Round-Up/Glyphosate in our Parks, Reserves and on the Road Verges

If you live in the Nelson City Council area, you can register your property as spray-free.  This means that Council will not use sprays around your property, e.g. on the street or footpath outside.  It also means that the more people who are requesting a spray-free zone, the more likely they are to look at alternatives for weed control (e.g some places use hot steam on pavements).
You can find out more info here and sign up your property.
